At MJD we make sure our designs consider a BREEAM approach

What is BREEAM?

BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. Pronounced “BREE-AM” a widely recognized sustainability assessment method and rating system for buildings and infrastructure projects.

What is its purpose?

BREEAM evaluates the environmental performance of a building across various categories, such as energy, water, health, and pollution. It uses a points-based system to evaluate a building’s sustainability across various categories, including energy, water, health, pollution, and more.

The goal is to promote sustainable building practices and reduce the environmental impact of construction and operation.

Why is it important?

BREEAM is an internationally recognized standard in the UK. Certification can help reduce carbon emissions, improve whole-life performance, manage health and social impacts, and boost circularity, resilience, and biodiversity.

How does it work?

There is a BREEAM scoring system that is graded by an assessor during a Pre-assessment. Credits are achieved for meeting design specifications and an overall score is given.

Below, we’ve outlined the thresholds in the BREEAM rating system:

  • Outstanding: Scores that are greater or equal to 85%.
  • Excellent: Scores that are greater or equal to 70%.
  • Very good: Scores that are greater or equal to 55%.
  • Good: Scores that are greater or equal to 45%.
  • Pass: Scores that are greater or equal to 30%.
  • Unclassified: Scores that are less than 30%
